Spyword Research Tools – How useful are they?
There are more and more Spy Tools coming to the markets. They all claim to reveal the keywords and ads from successful affiliate Pay per Click campaigns. But do they really work?
How do they work?
It is well-known in the marketing world that ads that appear consistently over a longer time must be successful. Otherwise the company would stop advertising if they lose money on a campaign.
Spy tools track the running PPC campaigns and record for which keywords the ad are shown and how long.
How accurate are Spy tools?
I tested the accuracy of spy tools by analysing one of my own pay per click campaigns. The results were interesting. Most tools showed keywords and ads that I haven’t used for my campaigns. They also showed some ads and keywords that I stopped running. Overall the accuracy was average and it seems that the data is out of date.
One the one hand this is good for PPC advertizer because it protects their campaigns. On the other hand you can not just enter the url of a competitor and think you have the complete picture of his or her campaign.
Some clever marketers found out that they can block the spytools from their site by changing the htaccess file.
